Management Systems

EHS management systems can take numerous forms.  They can be:

• Formal - following standards such as ISO 14001 or ANSI Z10
• Informal - not following any standard, but have identifiable components
• Siloed - with a separate EMS and OHSMS structures
• Integrated - where EHS is integral within one system

Since the early to mid 1990s there has been a trend to use formal management system structures as a way to define an organization’s EHS Framework and approach. 

Organizations report that formal management systems:

• Help organize and simplify the delivery of EHS activities
• Provide a framework for consistency
• Are a vehicle for communicating EHS to others in the organization
• Give EHS professionals an new identity within which they are more effective
• Are a vehicle for integrating EHS into the organizational fabric
• Regulatory compliance of course is still important, but de-emphasized
• Increase in EHS performance and effectiveness
